How to Make a YouTube Thumbnail with Claude Design: Size, Safe Areas and a Ready Prompt

6 October 2026 · 6 minute read

A YouTube thumbnail made with Claude Design is a 1280x720 (16:9) design with three to five large words, one clear focal point and nothing important in the bottom-right corner, where YouTube draws the video length. Ask Claude Design for that exact canvas, export the artboard as a PNG and upload it in YouTube Studio. YouTube now accepts thumbnails up to 3840x2160 and 50 MB from a computer, but uploads from the phone app are still capped at 2 MB, and a detailed PNG can go over that.

The short version: design at 1280x720, keep the bottom-right corner and the bottom edge empty, make the words readable at the size of a postage stamp, and upload from a computer if the file is over 2 MB (or convert it to JPG first).

What size is a YouTube thumbnail in 2026?

YouTube changed the rules in late 2025. At the end of October 2025 it announced that the thumbnail limit would rise from 2 MB to 50 MB so channels could upload 4K thumbnails, and the higher limit was reported live on desktop in March 2026. The YouTube Help page on custom thumbnails, checked in October 2026, now says:

Minimum640 px wide640 px tall
Aspect ratio16:99:16
FormatsJPG or PNGJPG or PNG
File size, computer50 MB50 MB
File size, phone app2 MB2 MB

1280x720 is the old recommendation and still a safe canvas: it is 16:9, twice the minimum width, and comfortably under 2 MB as a JPG. A 2560x1440 file (the same design at 2x) looks sharper on large screens and still sits well inside the desktop limits. Guides that say 2 MB everywhere, or list GIF and BMP, were written before the change. You also need a verified YouTube account to upload a custom thumbnail at all. Every other platform size is in the Claude Design size guide.

Which part of the thumbnail does YouTube cover?

YouTube draws its own interface on top of your image and does not publish a safe zone. Two overlays are predictable:

  • The video length badge, in the bottom-right corner of every video thumbnail. YouTube does not publish its size, so as a rule of thumb keep roughly the bottom-right 20% of the width and 15% of the height clear: on a 1280x720 canvas, a box of about 256x108 px.
  • A red progress bar along the bottom edge, shown to viewers who have already watched part of the video.

That makes the bottom-right corner the worst place for a face, a price, a logo or the last word of your headline, and it is exactly where a left-to-right layout tends to end. Put the words on the left or across the top, put the face or object on the right but above the badge, and leave about 40 px between anything important and every edge. If your design needs a detail in the bottom right, it is decoration, not message.

How big should the text be to read on a phone?

Most people see your thumbnail at a fraction of its real size: in the suggested-videos column on desktop, and in phone feeds and search results, the whole 1280 px width shrinks to a few centimetres. What survives that is short, heavy and high in contrast.

  • Three to five words. Do not repeat the video title; add to it.
  • A heavy sans-serif (black or extra-bold weight), with letters at least about 100 px tall on the 1280x720 canvas.
  • Strong contrast between text and background, or a thick outline or shadow behind the letters.
  • One focal point: a face with a clear expression, one object or one number.
  • No small print, dates, URLs or logos you need people to read.

Test before you upload: open the PNG on your phone, or shrink it to about 320 px wide on screen. If you cannot read every word in a second, cut words or make them bigger.

What prompt should you give Claude Design?

This prompt puts the size, the covered corner and the legibility rules into the brief, so the first draft is already close. Replace the parts in square brackets. To include yourself, attach a cut-out photo (background already removed) to the message and say where it goes; otherwise Claude Design leaves an empty slot for an image.

Design a 1280x720 YouTube thumbnail (16:9). It must still be readable when shrunk to 320px wide on a phone.

Copy, exactly this and nothing more: [3 TO 5 WORDS, e.g. I TRIED 7 AI DESIGN TOOLS]

Layout:
- The words sit on the left half, stacked over two or three lines, in a very heavy sans-serif with letters at least 100px tall. Give them a thick dark outline or shadow so they stay readable on any background.
- The right half holds [the attached cut-out photo of me, looking surprised / one large object: describe it]. Keep the face or object in the upper two-thirds of the canvas.
- Keep the bottom-right corner (the last 260px across and 110px up) empty of text, faces and logos: YouTube covers it with the video length.
- Keep the bottom 20px free of anything important, and leave at least 40px between any text and every edge.

Style: [bright yellow text on a near-black background], one accent colour only, high contrast everywhere.

Leave out: small text, the video title, logos, borders, and arrows or emoji unless I ask for them.

For a test, ask for three artboards side by side with the same layout and a different hook or image on each. More prompts in the same style, including banners and link previews, are in 12 Claude Design prompts for social posts.

How do you export the thumbnail from Claude Design?

Claude Design exports a single artboard as a PNG: open the artboard's menu on the canvas and choose PNG 1x or PNG 2x, or, in a Claude conversation, use Share > Export > PNG (image). Anthropic does not document the exact pixel output, so check the downloaded file's dimensions (it should be 16:9) and its size before uploading. Which limit applies depends on where you upload from:

Where you uploadLimitWhat to send
YouTube Studio on a computer50 MB, up to 3840x2160The PNG as exported
YouTube or YouTube Studio app on a phone2 MBA JPG, if the PNG is over 2 MB

Text and flat colour compress well as PNG, but a photo-heavy 2x PNG can pass 2 MB. Claude Design has no JPG option, so convert it with a free tool such as Squoosh: pick MozJPEG and lower the quality until the file is under 2 MB, checking that the text edges stay clean. If the thumbnail looks soft once it is on YouTube, the causes and fixes are in why Claude Design exports look blurry.

When is a dedicated renderer worth it?

For a single thumbnail you designed yourself, the built-in PNG is usually enough. A renderer earns its place in the cases Claude Design does not cover: a thumbnail a teammate or client sends you as an HTML file, one made in another AI tool, or an export that picks up stray editor elements around the design. Renda takes the HTML or .zip export, and its YouTube thumbnail preset renders a 16:9 thumbnail at 2x (a 2560x1440 PNG) with the editor chrome removed. That is well inside the desktop limits. Like any PNG, though, it can go over the 2 MB phone limit if the design is photo-heavy, and the output is PNG only, so the Squoosh step still applies before a mobile upload.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my thumbnail upload rejected?

Usually it is the file: over 2 MB from the phone app, over 50 MB from a computer, or not a JPG or PNG. Custom thumbnails also need a verified account. If none of those apply, try the upload again from YouTube Studio on a computer.

Can you A/B test YouTube thumbnails?

Yes, with Test & Compare in YouTube Studio on desktop: up to three thumbnails, titles, or both. YouTube picks the winner by share of watch time, not click-through rate. It is not available for Shorts, private or made-for-kids videos, scheduled livestreams, or premieres until after they air. YouTube aims to finish a test within two weeks.

Should a thumbnail be PNG or JPG?

Both are accepted. PNG keeps text and flat colour sharpest; JPG makes much smaller files from photos. Use PNG when it fits the limit for where you are uploading, JPG when it does not.

Can you make a Shorts thumbnail the same way?

Yes. Ask Claude Design for a 1080x1920 (9:16) canvas instead. YouTube accepts Shorts thumbnails up to 2160x3840 and at least 640 px tall. The same rules apply: few words, big type, and a margin around every edge.
