How to Turn a Resume from Claude or ChatGPT into a Clean PDF

6 October 2026 · 7 minute read

The free way to turn a resume Claude or ChatGPT wrote into a clean PDF is to ask for it as a one-page HTML file with print styles, open that file in your browser and choose Print > Save as PDF. The PDF keeps real, selectable text, which is what an applicant tracking system (ATS) reads, and it costs nothing: no resume builder, no download fee. Keep a pixel-perfect rendered PDF or PNG for places where a person looks at the design, such as a portfolio, a LinkedIn post or a copy you print yourself.

The short version: use the prompt below, save the result as resume.html, press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac), choose Save as PDF with the paper set to A4 or Letter, Margins set to None, Background graphics on and Headers and footers off. Check the preview says 1 page.

Why ask the AI for an HTML resume instead of a document?

Copying a resume out of a chat into Word or Google Docs tends to lose the layout: headings turn into bold lines, spacing drifts and you end up formatting by hand. An HTML file keeps the layout exactly as the AI wrote it, opens in any browser, and the browser's own print engine turns it into a PDF with real text. You also keep the source: ask for a change in the chat, save the new file and print again.

Both assistants hand over HTML in their own way. ChatGPT shows it in a code block with a Preview tab (canvas was replaced by code blocks in May 2026) and you take it with Copy code. Claude shows it as an artifact, which you can export as HTML or ask for as a file.

What prompt gets a one-page resume as HTML?

Paste this, fill the brackets, and add your own details at the end. The content lines matter most: AI models are good at polishing wording and just as good at inventing achievements, so tell it not to.

Turn my details below into a one-page resume, as a single standalone HTML file with all CSS inline.

Page:
- Paper size: [A4]. The body is the page: exactly [210mm x 297mm] (for US Letter, 8.5in x 11in), white, with [15mm] of padding inside and nothing around it on screen.
- Print styles: an @page rule with the same size and zero margin, background colours forced to print exactly, and no section split across a page break.
- Everything fits on one page. If it does not, tighten the wording rather than shrinking the text.

Layout and type:
- One column, in this order: name and contact line, short summary, experience, skills, education.
- Plain section headings: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education.
- Font: [Inter] from Google Fonts. Body text at least 10pt, name about 22pt.
- One accent colour, [#1F4E79], for the name and headings only.
- No icons, photos, charts, skill bars, or text inside images.
- Email and LinkedIn as real links, with the address written out in full.

Content:
- Use only the facts I give you. Do not invent numbers, employers, dates or achievements.
- 3 to 5 bullet points per job, each starting with a verb.

My details:
[paste your current resume or notes here]

Read the result before you save it. Check every date, job title and number against your notes; a model that is asked to sound impressive can still slip in a figure you never gave it.

A4 or US Letter: which size should your resume be?

Use the paper size of the country you are applying in. If someone prints a resume on the other size, it gets scaled to fit, with uneven margins.

PaperSizeIn CSS pixels (96 per inch)Used in
A4210 x 297 mm794 x 1123The UK, Europe and most of the world
US Letter8.5 x 11 in (216 x 279 mm)816 x 1056The US and Canada

Letter is slightly wider and 18 mm shorter than A4, so a resume that only just fits on A4 can spill onto a second Letter page. Name one size in the prompt and print on the same size.

How do you save the resume as a PDF with selectable text?

  1. Get the file. In ChatGPT, click Copy code, paste it into a plain-text editor (Notepad, or TextEdit after Format > Make Plain Text) and save it as resume.html. In Claude, use the artifact's download or export option (Share > Export > HTML on newer artifacts), or ask "send me the HTML file for this artifact".
  2. Open it in Chrome or Edge and press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac).
  3. Set Destination to Save as PDF. Under More settings, set Paper size to match the prompt and Margins to None (the page has its own padding).
  4. Tick Background graphics so the accent colour prints, and untick Headers and footers so the date and file path stay off the page.
  5. Check the preview says 1 page, then Save.

Open the PDF and try to select your name, or search it for your email address. If that works, the text is real. If the resume runs to two pages, ask the AI to "tighten the wording so it fits on one page" rather than shrinking it with the Scale setting, which makes small text harder to read.

Will an applicant tracking system read your PDF?

An ATS is the software many employers use to collect applications and pull the text out of each file. It can only use text that is actually in the PDF. A browser-printed PDF of an HTML resume has that text. A PDF made from a picture of the page (a screenshot pasted into a document, or an image-only render) has none, so the system may see an empty document or have to guess the words from the picture.

Beyond real text, simple is safer: one column, plain section headings, no words inside images. The prompt above asks for all of that. If a job portal asks for a Word file, give it one: a Claude Docs artifact exports to Word or Google Docs, a Gemini Canvas document exports to Google Docs, and Word can open the .html file itself, though some styling may shift. The Claude artifact to PDF guide explains the selectable-text trade-off for longer documents too.

When is a rendered PDF or PNG the better choice?

When a person, not a parser, is the audience: a resume image in a LinkedIn post, a page on your portfolio site, a visual CV you send straight to a hiring manager, or a copy you print to hand over. Browser printing can still shift things on the way: a font that loads late, a page break in the wrong place, colours dropped because Background graphics was off. A render captures exactly what the browser draws on screen.

Renda does this from the same file. Paste the HTML (from Claude or ChatGPT) on the Claude Artifact to PNG page, or drop resume.html, then download a PNG of the full page at 2x, or a PDF. Fit to design makes one PDF page with your resume's exact proportions, which is the one to use for US Letter, as there is no Letter page option; A4 portrait places it on an A4 sheet. Every page of that PDF is a single image, so the text cannot be selected or searched and the links are not clickable. Use it to show the design, and send the browser-printed PDF with applications. The free tier gives five PNGs a month with no account, and files are deleted after 2 hours (24 on Pro).

For other ways to save a page as an image without uploading anything, see HTML to PNG without code.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Claude's or ChatGPT's own export instead?

Yes, if you are happy with a plainer layout. A Claude Docs artifact (paid Claude plans) exports to Word, PDF, Markdown or Google Docs, and ChatGPT's writing blocks can be copied into Google Docs or Word. Both keep the text as text. HTML gives you more control over the design.

How do I update the resume later?

Keep resume.html. Ask the AI for the change in the same chat and save the new version, or open the file in a plain-text editor to fix a typo yourself. Then print to PDF again; it takes under a minute.

Is it safe to put my resume into an AI chat?

A resume holds personal details, so check your assistant's data and training settings first, and leave out anything you would not put on the final page, such as your home address. Printing to PDF in your browser keeps the finished file on your own computer.

Need a pixel-perfect copy to share?

Paste your resume's HTML and download a sharp PNG or a one-page PDF image to post, share or print. For applications, send the browser-printed PDF with real text.
