The Best AI Tools for Instagram Carousels in 2026, Honestly Compared

6 October 2026 · 7 minute read

The best AI tool for Instagram carousels depends on the job: Canva if you want a finished carousel from a template with little effort and a usable free plan, aiCarousels or ContentDrips if you want to turn a topic, link or blog post into slides in a minute, and Claude Design if you want a custom layout in your exact brand and are happy to add an export step. ChatGPT can make carousel slides too, but it draws each one as a separate picture, so text and style drift. Whichever you pick, design every slide at 1080x1440 (3:4) or 1080x1350 (4:5); Instagram allows up to 20 slides per carousel.

The short version: Canva for templates and a free plan, aiCarousels for a free topic-to-carousel with no sign-up, ContentDrips or PostNitro for repurposing content at volume, Claude Design for brand-exact custom design on a paid Claude plan. Be wary of "best carousel maker" lists: most are written by one of the tools and rank it first.

What does an AI carousel maker actually do?

"AI carousel maker" covers three quite different workflows, and most disappointment comes from picking the wrong one.

  • Template first. Canva and Adobe Express start from a template and use AI to fill or rearrange it. Fast and familiar, but reviewers describe the AI as a starting point you finish by hand, and plenty of feeds already use the same templates.
  • Topic to carousel. aiCarousels, ContentDrips and PostNitro take a topic, a link, a blog post or a PDF and return a branded carousel. Built for repurposing and volume, with less control over the design.
  • Design from a prompt. Claude Design (and Decktopus) generate a designed, multi-slide layout from a description. The most distinctive results, and the most steering required.

Image generators such as ChatGPT sit outside all three: they draw each slide as a picture. Whatever the type, judge a tool on four things for Instagram: whether the slides look consistent, whether the text is exactly what you wrote, whether you get one image per slide at the right size, and what the free plan really includes.

Which AI tools are worth trying for Instagram carousels in 2026?

These are the tools that come up most often in 2026 roundups, checked against each tool's own pricing or help pages in October 2026.

Paid plans, from the vendors' own pricing pages in October 2026: ContentDrips Starter is $15 a month (500 credits), PostNitro Starter is $15 a month (no watermark, 30 downloads) with scheduling from Creator+ at $30, and Claude Pro, which includes Claude Design, is $20 a month or $17 billed annually. Adobe Express has a free plan with daily generative credits and Premium at $9.99 a month, though it rarely appears in carousel roundups. Taplio (from $39 a month) is a LinkedIn growth suite rather than an Instagram tool.

For most small businesses posting a few carousels a month, Canva's free plan or aiCarousels is enough, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. Claude Design earns its place when the carousel has to look distinctive and on-brand across every slide, or when you already pay for Claude for other work. It needs more steering than a template tool: you describe the deck, then refine it slide by slide, and since 16 September 2026 you can do that inside any Claude conversation as well as in the standalone app.

Which AI carousel makers are genuinely free?

"Free" means very different things across these tools. Grouped by what you actually get without paying:

  • Free and usable, no card: Canva Free, Adobe Express Free and aiCarousels (no sign-up to create, though one reviewer notes customisation is limited on the free tier), plus smaller tools such as CreatorFlow and CarouselMaker.co.
  • Free with a catch: PostNitro Free (5 slides per carousel, 5 downloads a month, watermark), ContentDrips Free (50 credits, enough for three blog-to-carousel conversions at 15 credits each) and Gamma Free (400 credits that never refresh, and a "Made with Gamma" badge on PDF and PowerPoint exports).
  • Not free: Claude Design (needs Claude Pro or above), Taplio (7-day trial), and Krumzi and Predis (trials).

Free plans change often, so check the limits on the day you sign up. If a watermark would be a deal-breaker, download one test slide before you build the whole carousel.

Can ChatGPT make an Instagram carousel?

Yes, but it is the weakest fit for text-heavy slides. ChatGPT Images 2.5, released on 8 September 2026 and available on every ChatGPT plan, generates each slide as a separate image. Because every slide is a new generation, colours, fonts and art style tend to drift from one slide to the next, a common complaint in carousel tutorials. OpenAI's own documentation also says its image models can still struggle with precise text placement and clarity, so every word needs checking.

Size is another snag. OpenAI's API accepts custom sizes only in multiples of 16 pixels, and 1080 is not one, so you cannot ask for exactly 1080x1350 and will need to resize. ChatGPT is excellent for a striking cover image or illustrated slides with few words. The full Claude Design vs ChatGPT Images comparison covers when to use each.

How do you get a Claude Design carousel onto Instagram?

Instagram wants one image per slide, all at the same ratio. Claude Design can now export a single artboard as a PNG at 1x or 2x from the menu on each artboard, and in a Claude conversation Share > Export lists PNG too. For a single post, that may be all you need. For a carousel it means one download per slide, with no Instagram size presets, so check that every slide's canvas is 1080x1350 or 1080x1440 before you start. Two other routes:

  • Send it to Canva. Canva converts a Claude Design slide deck into an editable Canva presentation (other designs import with more limited editing), and Canva downloads PNGs on every plan, including Free. Canva warns that complex CSS may not convert exactly and that hosted fonts or images may not import, so check each slide.
  • Render the export. Renda takes the HTML or zip export and returns the whole carousel in one go: one PNG per slide, numbered in order, at Instagram 4:5 (delivered at 2x, 2160x2700) or, for a 3:4 design, its own canvas at 2x, with leftover viewer elements such as arrows and slide counters hidden. Each slide counts as one of the five free PNGs a month.

Frequently asked questions

Are "best AI carousel maker" lists trustworthy?

Treat them with care. Most are written by one of the tools on the list, and nearly all rank their own product first: ContentDrips, PostNitro, Decktopus, Krumzi and aiCarousels all publish such roundups. Read them for feature details, not for the ranking.

What size should Instagram carousel slides be?

1080x1440 (3:4) if you upload in the app: it is the tallest shape Instagram accepts and matches the profile grid. 1080x1350 (4:5) is the safe choice for scheduled posts. Keep every slide the same size, because mixing ratios invites cropping. The Instagram post size guide covers the details.

Do AI carousel tools post to Instagram for you?

Some do. PostNitro schedules to Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and Threads on its Creator+ plan. aiCarousels has no scheduling or publishing, and neither Claude Design nor ChatGPT posts anything, so you upload the images yourself or use a scheduler.

Is Claude Design worth paying for just for carousels?

It is not sold on its own: it comes with Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 billed annually) and higher plans, and its use counts towards your plan's shared usage limits. If carousels are all you need and templates suit you, Canva's free plan costs nothing. If you also use Claude for writing or research, one subscription covers both.
